I create layered, semi-abstract landscape paintings inspired by trees, water and shifting light in nature. My work often carries a sense of atmosphere and quiet tension, with figures or wild swimmers sometimes appearing within the landscape. I’m drawn to capturing not just what a place looks like, but how it feels.
I create layered, semi-abstract landscape paintings inspired by trees, water and shifting light in the natural world. My work is rooted in a lifelong connection to nature, shaped by an early fascination with wildlife and a background in zoology, botany and geology, before later returning to study art as a mature student.
I work primarily in acrylics, building and removing layers of paint to create depth, pattern and atmosphere. Figures, wild swimmers and animals sometimes appear within the landscapes, bringing a sense of narrative or quiet tension. My paintings are often described as having an edge or atmosphere, as though something is about to happen — something I don’t consciously set out to do, but am glad is there.
Alongside painting, I have also worked with textiles and mixed media, using similar layered processes of building and revealing. I am interested in how materials can hold memory, rhythm and emotion, and how landscape can be experienced as something felt as much as seen.
Nature has always been central to my life and work, and I am now moving towards a new chapter as I retire from my teaching post. I am training as a Forest Bathing Guide, and plan to lead gentle walks that combine time in nature with simple nature journaling — slowing down and noticing the small details of place and season.
I am also beginning to develop a weekly creative class in Dalguise. This will include structured sessions for more experienced artists, alongside space for others who may simply wish to explore something creative in a relaxed and supportive way. Ideas include simple book structures and calming, repetitive mark-making exercises such as watercolour patterns or mandala-inspired work, designed to be accessible, meditative and enjoyable.
At the heart of everything I do is a desire to help people slow down, notice more, and reconnect with the natural world through both looking and making.
