The castle has had a diverse history, both turbulent and peaceful and has been home to politicians, soldiers, agriculturalists and entrepreneurs. It offers a fascinating insight into Scottish history against a backdrop of fine 18th century interiors and Scots Baronial architecture.
The Gardens were laid out in the 18th century and include a walled garden. Peacocks roam freely, and red squirrels and Highland cattle can be seen in the grounds. There is also a Sculpture Trail, with a mixture of contemporary and 18th-century sculpture. Check the website for special events and to book tickets.
